Американскими учеными из Йельского университета обнаружены ящерицы, выжившие при падении метеорита, ставшего причиной гибели динозавров 66 млн лет назад. Они уцелели вблизи эпицентра удара и продолжают обитать в тех же регионах Северной и Центральной Америки.

Как рассказывает публикация по итогам исследования в научном журнале Biology Letters (BioLetts), речь - о маленьких ночных ящерицах семейства Xantusiidae, сообщает Planet Today. Специалисты применили метод молекулярных часов, позволивший установить, что последний общий предок нынешних ночных ящериц появился порядка 90 млн лет назад.

Выяснилось, что две эволюционные линии этих существ пережили катастрофу близ эпицентра удара, обрушившегося на полуостров Юкатан. Сейчас там о той древней катастрофе напоминает 180-километровый кратер Чиксулуб.

Эксперты в точности не знают причины выживания рептилий, есть лишь версии. В частности, спасительным мог оказаться медленный метаболизм. Помог и скрытный образ жизни этих представителей фауны. Они маленькие, не более 10 сантиметров в длину, и могут прятаться в расщелинах скал и под корой деревьев.

Ночные ящерицы оказались единственными наземными позвоночными, которые сохранились в этой местности со времен катастрофы. Были и некоторые другие виды, выжившие сразу после ЧП, но они либо мигрировали, либо вымерли позже.
