Սիրիայի հեռացած նախագահ Բաշար ալ-Ասադը Դամասկոսում մնացել է մինչև դեկտեմբերի 8-ի վաղ առավոտը, երբ զինված ընդդիմությունը մտել է քաղաք, և լքել է երկիրը միայն նույն օրը երեկոյան, երբ գրեթե լիակատար վերահսկողություն է սահմանվել երկրի մնացած տարածքի վրա։ 

Սիրիայի նախկին առաջնորդի խոսքերն է փոխանցել նրա գրասենյակը՝ X սոցիալական ցանցում, գրել են ԶԼՄ-ները։

«Ասադը մտադիր չէր հրաժարական տալ և չէր մտածում ահաբեկիչների հարձակման օրերին ապաստան խնդրելու մասին (...) Այնուամենայնիվ,իշխանությունը զավթելուց հետո նախագահի համար երկրում մնալը անիմաստ դարձավ»։

«Ասադը մտադիր չի եղել հրաժարական տալ և չի մտածել ահաբեկիչների հարձակման օրերին ապաստան խնդրելու մասին (...) Այնուամենայնիվ, իշխանությունը զավթելուց հետո նախագահի համար երկրում մնալը անիմաստ է դարձել», - նշվում է հայտարարության մեջ։

Նշվում է նաև, որ Ասադն ընդունել է կառավարության բանակի և կառավարման համակարգի փլուզումը, ինչը և հանգեցրել է իր հրաժարականի որոշմանը։ Բացի այդ, սկզբում գնացել է Խմեյմիմ, իսկ այնտեղից թռել է Ռուսաստան՝ իմանալով Դամասկոսի վերջնական անկման մասին։
