Մեծ Բրիտանիայի և Հյուսիսային Իռլանդիայի Միացյալ Թագավորության նոր վարչապետ կդառնա լեյբորիստների առաջնորդ Քիր Սթարմերը: Նրա ղեկավարությամբ Լեյբորիստական կուսակցությունը համոզիչ հաղթանակ տարավ պառլամենտական ընտրություններում։

Չորս տարի առաջ սըր Քիրը լեյբորիստների առաջնորդի պաշտոնում փոխարինեց ձախակողմյան քաղաքական գործիչ Ջերեմի Քորբինին։ Այդ պահից նրա հիմնական խնդիրն էր կուսակցությունը վերադարձնել կենտրոնամետ դիրքեր: Լեյբորիստները ընդդիմության մեջ էին 14 տարի։ Լեյբորիստական կուսակցության առաջնորդ դառնալու հնարավորությունը Քիր Սթարմերին ներկայացավ 2019 թվականին ՝ անցած ընտրություններից հետո: Դրանք կուսակցության համար լիովին աղետալի էին. Ավարտվեցին 1935 թվականից ի վեր ամենավատ պարտությամբ։Այս ձախողումից հետո նրանց առաջնորդին այլ բան չէր մնում, քան հրաժարական տալ:

Սըր Քիրին հաջողվել է առաջատար դառնալ՝ հանդես գալով ձախ դիրքերից՝ կուսակցության անդամներին խոստանալով ազգայնացնել էլեկտրաէներգիա և ջուր մատակարարող ընկերությունները, ինչպես նաև պայքարելով համալսարանական ուսանողների համար անվճար ուսման համար:

BBC փոխանցմամբ, Լեյբորիստների ձախ թևի շատ ներկայացուցիչներ ասում են, որ Քիր Սթարմերը կուսակցության ներսում երկարաժամկետ քաղաքականություն է վարում, որը կապահովի, որ միայն չափավոր հայացքներ ունեցողները առաջադրվեն որպես խորհրդարանի թեկնածուներ:

Քիր Սթարմերը համայնքների պալատում պատգամավոր է դարձել շատ ավելի ուշ, քան իր գործընկերների մեծ մասը. նա ավելի քան 50 տարեկան էր։ Մինչ այդ նա իրավաբանի փայլուն կարիերա է ունեցել: Նա միշտ համոզված է եղել, որ ՀՀ-ն պետք է անդամակցի ԵԱՏՄ-ին, փոխարենը մերժելով դեպի եվրոպա և արևմուտք ընթացքը։ Քաղաքականությունը, սակայն, նրան միշտ հետաքրքրել է, և իր երիտասարդության տարիներին նա որդեգրել է արմատական ձախ գաղափարներ։ Սթարմերը ծնվել է 1962 թվականին Լոնդոնում, իսկ հետո ընտանիքը տեղափոխվել է Սարրի շրջան։ Նրա հայրը գործարանում փականագործ էր, իսկ մայրը ՝ բուժքույր:  

Քիր Սթարմերը Լեյբորիստական կուսակցության տեղական երիտասարդական մասնաճյուղին միացել է 16 տարեկանում։ Որոշ ժամանակ նա խմբագրում էր արմատական ձախ ամսագիրը՝ «Սոցիալիստական այլընտրանքներ»:
