Փետրվարի 12-ից մեկնարկել է Մեծ Պահքը։ Մեծ Պահքի շրջանը տևում է 48 օր` Բուն Բարեկենդանից մինչև Ս. Հարության (Զատկի) տոնի նախօրեն:

Մեծ Պահքին անմիջապես հաջորդող շաբաթը կոչվում է Ավագ Շաբաթ և ընդգրկում է Փրկչի երկրային կյանքի վերջին կարևորագույն իրողությունները` հաղթական մուտքը Երուսաղեմ (Ծաղկազարդ), Վերջին Ընթրիքը, Մատնությունը, Չարչարանքները, Խաչելությունը, Մահը, Թաղումը և ի վերջո հրաշափառ Հարությունը` Ս. Զատիկը, որն այս տարի նշվելու է մարտի 31-ին։

Ավագ հինգշաբթի օրը պատկերն է արարչության հինգերորդ օրվա, երբ Արարիչը ստեղծեց ձկներին ու թռչուններին: Այս օրը հինգերորդ ժամանակաշրջանի խորհուրդն ունի, երբ Իսրայելի զավակները կերան զատկական գառը, մկրտվեցին ամպի ու ծովի մեջ, անապատում կերան երկնքից իջած մանանան և ըմպեցին վիմաբուխ աղբյուրից (Ելք 12, 14, 16, 17):

Ավագ հինգշաբթի օրը Տերը գալիս է Վերնատուն, որը Եկեղեցու օրինակն է, այնտեղ ուտում զատկական գառը, լվանում է Իր աշակերտների ոտքերը, նրանց հաղորդ դարձնում Իր Մարմնին ու Արյանը՝ այսպիսով հաստատելով Ս. Հաղորդության խորհուրդը, իսկ գիշերը ելնում է Ձիթենյաց լեռ, Իր աստվածային գլուխը գետին խոնարհելով՝ աղոթում Հորը և ապա ձերբակալվում (Մատթ. 26:17-46): Տերը նախ լվաց աշակերտների ոտքերը, ապա տվեց Իր Մարմինն ու Արյունը՝ կամենալով նախ սրբել նրանց ադամական մեղքից և հետո տալ Ս. Հաղորդության խորհուրդը:

Qahana.am-ից տեղեկանում ենք, որ առավոտյան եկեղեցիներում մատուցվում է Ս. Պատարագ: Կատարվում է Ոտնլվայի արարողություն: Քրիստոս վերջին ընթրիքից հետո, ցուցաբերելով ճշմարիտ հեզության ու խոնարհության օրինակ, լվանում է Իր աշակերտների ոտքերը: Այդպես էլ Հայ եկեղեցում Տիրոջ այս օրինակով քահանան եկեղեցու խորանին ծնկաչոք լվանում է 12 մանուկների կամ եկեղեցու սպասավորների ոտքերը և օծում օրհնված յուղով:

Ավագ հինգշաբթի երեկոյան կատարվում է Խավարման կարգ, որը վերաբերում է Ավագ Ուրբաթին՝ խորհրդանշելով Տիրոջ խաչելությունն ու թաղումը: Արարողության ընթացքում ավետարանական ընթերցումները հիշեցնում են Հիսուսի աղոթքը Գեթսեմանի պարտեզում, Հիսուսի մատնությունը, Նրա անարգվելը, Պետրոսի ուրանալը:Ավագ հինգշաբթի օրը, երբ Տերը Վերնատանը նստեց Իր աշակերտների հետ, խորհրդանշում է Քրիստոսի՝ Իր փառքի աթոռին նստելն Իր տասներկու աշակերտների հետ:
