Բրիտանացի գիտնականներն արևային էներգիայի պահպանման հետաքրքիր ու մասշտաբային կոնցեպտ են մշակել, էներգիան առաջարկում են պահպանել հողի տակ։ Քարդիֆի համալսարանի դոկտոր Մայքլ Հարբոթի խոսքով՝ գաղափարը կայանում է կանաչ էներգիայի պահպանման համար հատուկ մարտկոցների ստեղծման մեջ, միրոբների հիմքով, որոնք բնակվում են հողի տակ, այսինքն խթանել, որշ միկրոօրգանիզմներ հողի մեջ՝ օգտագործելով հողանցված էլեկտրոդները, էլեկտրականությունն արևային մարտկոցներից ստանալու համար։

Ըստ Հարբոթի՝ նախագիծը կարող է մասշտաբային լինել։ Օգտագործելով հարուստ բնական ռեսուրսը՝ հողը վերականգնվող էներգիայի պահպանման համար անհրաժեշտություն դարձնելը։ Հողի միջոցով էներգիայի փոխանցման գործընթացը ինչ-որ չափով նման է ֆոտոսինթեզի, երբ բույսերը կլանում են ածխաթթու գազը և այն վերածում թթվածնի։

Առայժմ հայտնի չէ, թե ինչպես են բրիտանացի գիտնականները մտադիր իրականացնել իրենց այս տարօրինակ ծրագիրը, սակայն Քարդիֆի համալսարանը մտադիր է ահռելի տարածքներ գնել ոչ միայն Բրիտանիայում, այլ նաև Աֆրիկյան Սահարայում, որպեսզի սկսի փորձարկումները և այդ կերպ մշակումներն իրականացնի։

Հայաստանում կա արևային վահանակներ արտադրող մեկ ընկերություն՝ «Սոլարոնը»։
