Երկրի օրապտույտի արագությունը 2020 թվականին փոքր-ինչ աճել է, և եթե այս միտումը շարունակվի նաև 2021-ին, ապա հաջորդ Ամանորին մենք պատմության մեջ առաջին անգամ ստիպված կլինենք ոչ թե ավելացնել կոորդինացիոն վայրկյանը, այլ հանել այն համաշխարհային կոորդինացված ժամանակից։

Ընդունված է համարել, որ լրիվ օրը 24 ժամ, կամ 86,400 վայրկյան է պարունակում։ Սակայն այն ժամանակը, որի ընթացքում Երկիր մոլորակը պտույտ է կատարում իր առանցքի շուրջը մեկ օրվա ընթացքում, կարող է թեթևակի տատանվել։ Այս փաստը հայտնի դարձավ 1960-ական թվականների սկզբին, երբ նոր տեխնոլոգիաների շնորհիվ ստեղծեցին ատոմային ժամացույց, որը և հնարավորություն տվեց մեծ ճշգրտությամբ հետևել օրապտույտի արագությանը։ Միջին նորմայից նման տատանումների պատճառ են հանդիսանում Երկրի միջուկի փոփոխությունները, մթնոլորտի և օվկիանոսների դինամիկան։ Որպես կանոն, այդ տատանումները չեն գերազանցում միլիվայրկյանի տասներորդ մասը, չնայած երբեմն կարող են հասնել և նույնիսկ փոքր-ինչ անցել մեկ միլիվայրկյանը։ Շեղումները երկու ուղղություններով էլ նկատվում են, սակայն ընդհանուր առմամբ ժամանակը մեծ կտրվածքով դիտարկելիս նկատվում է մոլորակի պտտման արագության դանդաղում, որի պատճառով ատոմային ժամացույցները առաջ են ընկնում, և Երկրագնդի պտույտի միջազգային ծառայությունը (International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service) ստիպված է լինում պարբերաբար կոորդինացիոն վայրկյան ավելացնել, որպեսզի ատոմային և արևային ժամերը համապատասխանացվեն։ Վերջին անգամ նման վայրկյան ավելացվել էր 2016 թվականին։

Իսկ 2020-ն այս առումով էլ տարբերվեց․ գիտնականները նկատեցինն, որ մոլորակի պտույտի արագության աճի պատճառով գերճշգրիտ ատոմային ժամացույցները փոքր-ինչ հետ են մնում արևային ժամանակից։ 1960 թվականից ի վեր իրականացվող չափումների տվյալներով ամենակարճ 28 օրերը բաժին են ընկել անցած տարվան, իսկ ռեկորդը սահմանվել էր հուլիսի 19-ին, երբ շեղումը կազմել էր 1,46 միլիվայրկյան։ Այժմ 2020-ը համարվում է ամենակարճ տարիներից մեկը։

Time & Date-ի փորձագետների կարծիքով, 2021 թվականին այս միտումը կշարունակվի, և գալիք տարվա մեկ օրը միջինում կլինի 0,05 միլիվայրկյանով ավելի կարճ, քան 24 ժամը: Այսպիսով սպասվում է, որ մինչև տարեվերջ շեղման արդյունքում կկուտակվի շուրջ 19 միլիվայրկյան: Որպես հետևանք Երկրագնդի պտույտի միջազգային ծառայությունը կարող է աննախադեպ քայլի գնալ և հայտարարել համաշխարհային կոորդինացված ժամանակից կոորդինացիոն վայրկյանի պակասացման մասին։ Մինչ այժմ մարդկությունը ատոմային ժամի սլաքը առաջ չէր շարժել։ Իհարկե նման ծրագրերը դեռևս պաշտոնապես չեն հայտարարել, սակայն, որպես կանոն, ճշգրտումները կատարվում են դեկտեմբերի 31-ից հունվարի 1-ի կեսգիշերին, իսկ մինչ այդ ժամանակը դեռ շատ բան կարող է փոխվել:
